The cognitive curl methodology emerged from my diverse background as a trader, athlete, coach, student, and parent. I draw inspiration from our physical journeys to explain mental growth. This is because physical progress is visible and straightforward where cognitive and emotional development is invisible -- thus requiring a nuanced perspective.
This methodology focuses on fostering systematic strength by understanding mental interconnectivity and purposefully directing actions toward our desired outcomes.
To do this I decided to use the idea of a curl because it is a simple movement meant to strengthen a specific muscle. But, when we do a curl correctly, there is more to it than lifting up a weight. It is just as important to focus on:
Moving the weight down, utilizes opposite but complimentary muscles. On the way up we create tension. But to do a curl effectively we also need to be able to release and let go.
Properly positioning the rest of the body to avoid injury. We need to learn how to identify personal misalignment and discover methods to re-center ourselves back into alignment.
Breathing correctly so muscles receive oxygen. Breathing increases presence, opening the brain to new potential and opportunity.
This methodology focuses on fostering systematic strength by understanding mental interconnectivity and purposefully directing actions toward desired outcomes.
I utilize the curl because in my own physical and cognitive experience I cared only about flexing — utilizing the tension of my future and past to motivate my progress, never learning to see the present. I realized it was this unwillingness to extend and release that was causing side effects that started impeding on my effectiveness, well being and growth. I saw my life as one movement, not two.
